Domestic violence in Russia is endemic and women are the ones who suffer the most from it. And yet, when called upon the issue, officials continue to make statements that fly in the face of facts, refusing to introduce legislation adopted by the majority of countries in the world. The existing laws fail to protect victims, while official statistics don’t even account for domestic violence as a category of crime. A look at what little data there is reveals the extent to which the current system is skewed to make Russian women vulnerable to violence and leave its victims defenseless.
