Do Russians really trust the police?
Public opinion polls tell that trust in the police in Russia is steadily growing, along with the positive personal attitudes to the police. But does the general opinion always match actions? If we look at the data of the very first victimization survey conducted in Russia by the Institute for the Rule of Law (European University) we will see that only a small share of victims contact the police after the crime. And in less than half of these cases the police starts official investigations, less than a third of which end up in court. So, Russian people can say they trust the police, but if they become crime victims, they’re unlikely to go to the police for help.
